EÜK Straelen
At the Europäisches Übersetzer-Kollegium (EÜK) in Straelen, the largest working centre for literary translators located in a small town on the Lower Rhine, students of the M. A. Literary Translation have the opportunity to gain deeper insights into their field through intensive seminars. Founded on 10 January 1978, the ETC's association aims to promote international understanding, tolerance in all areas of culture, and the spirit of international cooperation. Annually, over 500 guests live and work at EÜK Straelen e. V.
Guests at the EÜK have access to the world's first and largest specialised library for literary and non-fiction translation, housing 125,000 volumes. Students are taught how to effectively use the available reference works. Additionally, existing translations in numerous languages facilitate translation analysis and comparisons.
The contact with the translators working and residing at EÜK, which is essential in the industry, is a particularly important aspect of the seminars. Participants have the opportunity to engage with professional translators, for example, through social gatherings or joint readings.
The five-day stay and the shared organisation of the self-catering kitchen create a relaxed atmosphere for intense exchange among the students. The 2,500 m² of living space, which includes thirty fully equipped apartments, the library, and conference rooms, provide a unique environment and working conditions.
The cooperation with this institution has been in place since 1988 and is a particularly important element for the Master's programme, ensuring practical relevance.
