Admission Requirements
The following qualifications are required for admission to the Master's programme in Literary Translation:
- A completed Bachelor's degree (minimum grade of 2.5) in a relevant field.
The programme can be studied with one source language (English, French, or Spanish) or with two source languages (English-French, English-Italian, or English-Spanish).
A relevant degree is one that meets the following requirements for each chosen source language:
- At least 10 ECTS credits in language practice.
- At least 4 ECTS credits in literature and/or linguistics.
If necessary, some of these requirements can be fulfilled through additional studies. A semester abroad in a country where the chosen source language is spoken can be recognised as equivalent to 10 ECTS credits in language practice. International applicants who do not have a university entrance qualification from a German-speaking country must additionally demonstrate German language proficiency at the C2 level (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
Applications will also be considered if the certificate of the first academic degree is not yet available by the application deadline but is expected to be obtained by the end of the enrolment period. In this case, please include a copy of your current transcript of records with your application. Admission will be provisional until the documents are submitted.
All examination requirements in the first academic degree must be submitted by the end of the preceding summer semester (i.e., by 30 September).
Enrolment
After the application deadline, applicants will receive written confirmation of their eligibility for the Literary Translation programme. With this confirmation, you can enrol through the Student Secretariat of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf.
Transition from Bachelor to Master for HHU Internal Students
To be admitted to the Master's programme, you must apply via the application portal. Additionally, the following conditions must be met:
- All coursework and examinations for the Bachelor's degree must be completed, and the Bachelor's thesis must be submitted by 30 September (end of the summer semester)
- The grade for the Bachelor's thesis does not need to be available yet.
After re-registering as a Bachelor's student, receiving the grade for the Bachelor's thesis, and submitting the certificate, you will be transferred to the Master's programme.
Important: For this, re-registration must be completed by 1 September! Please ensure you meet this deadline!
FAQ
Please apply via the application portal of HHU Dusseldorf: https://digstu.hhu.de/
First, you need to register with your personal details. You will then receive an email with a user ID, which you can use to log in and start the application process. It is best to have any required documents ready in PDF format. You can also save your application and complete it at a later time. Once all information and documents are complete, you must 'submit' the application. If you need to make further changes, you can 'withdraw' the application, make the necessary adjustments, and then 'resubmit' it.

The following documents are required: the Bachelor's degree certificate (if already obtained) and the Transcript of Records (or a current academic record). Both can be uploaded as a PDF scan.
If you have completed a Bachelor's degree in the foreign language you are applying for, no additional language proficiency test or similar is required. In this case, the Transcript of Records will serve as proof of language proficiency and should be uploaded in the appropriate section.
A "relevant" Bachelor's degree with a minimum grade of 2.5. "Relevant" means that for each chosen source language, at least 10 CP in language practice and at least 4 CP in literature and/or linguistics have been completed.
We also consider applications where the completion of the previous degree is not certified by the application deadline but is expected to be certified by the start of the semester.
In this case, instead of the Bachelor's degree certificate and Transcript of Records, a current academic record should be uploaded. Admission will be provisional until the documents are submitted. To enable provisional enrolment in the Master's programme, all examinations for the Bachelor's degree must be completed by 30 September at the latest (i.e. the Bachelor's thesis must be submitted by then, but does not yet need to be graded).
If necessary, up to 6 of the 14 required CP can be made up for after immatriculation.
If you have completed the required 10 + 4 CP per source language (see "Which requirements do I have to fulfil?") in a relevant degree programme and can show this on your Transcript of Records, no additional proof of language proficiency is required. Simply upload your Transcript of Records (or a current academic record) at the appropriate point in the application process.
If you do not meet these requirements, you should contact the programme coordinator (email to ma-litueb(at)hhu.de or Yvonne Liebermann) before applying. You might then be required to upload a language certificate or proof of a stay abroad instead.
Since the programme focuses exclusively on literary translation into the target language German, excellent and nuanced language proficiency in German is essential. International applicants without a university entrance qualification from a German-speaking country must demonstrate German language skills at least at the C2 level (CEFR).
For specific questions and general advice, please feel free to contact the programme coordinators at any time (email to ma-litueb(at)hhu.de, for English Studies: Bettina.Burger(at)hhu.de, Yvonne Liebermann, for Romance Studies: gerling(at)hhu.de). We are happy to work with you to find individual solutions and provide advice via email or (online) office hours.
In this case, it is best to appply for both potential source langauges and upload the required documents for both. If you are deemed suitable for both languages, you can still opt for the single-language model at a later stage. If suitability is confirmed for only one of the two languages, your application will still be considered and not rejected.
You can simply leave these fields blank or enter a ‘0’.
You can upload further documents under ‘Optional documents’ on the application portal. It is not possible to enter comments or text. If in doubt, please contact ma-litueb(at)hhu.de or Yvonne Liebermann to explain your situation.
After the application deadline, all successful applicants will receive a written confirmation of their "special qualification for the Literary Translation programme," which they can use to officially enrol through the Student Service Center (SSC).
If your application is missing crucial documents or information, we may contact you with further questions.
Information on enrolment and the required documents can be found here.
HHU Bachelor's graduates must also participate in the application process via HISinOne and receive confirmation of eligibility for the Master's programme. You will then, however, not need to completely re-enrol but rather a change subject. For this, you must re-register for your Bachelor's programme within the regular re-registration deadline and submit all academic and examination requirements for the Bachelor's degree (including the Bachelor's thesis) by 30 September at the latest. Based on the preliminary grade average, provisional eligibility will be granted. Upon submission of the Bachelor's degree certificate with a minimum grade of 2.5, you will be transferred to the Master's programme.
For any issues or questions not answered on this page, your first point of contact is the central email address of the programme: ma-litueb@hhu.de. Our student assistants are happy to help wherever they can or will refer you to the appropriate contact.
