Lecturers
Katharina Herzberger, born in 1993, studied English at the University of Leipzig after spending time in Montpellier, Madrid, and London. She then moved to the publishing industry in Munich, where she worked at various companies, including C.H. Beck, dtv, and tolino, before becoming a freelance literary translator and editor. At the beginning of her freelance career, she completed an M.A. in Literary Translation (English) at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitity München. In addition to her specialization in children's and young adult literature, she also translates fiction and non-fiction. Most recently, she has translated works by Kay Kerr, Robert Thorogood, and Gemma Styles.
Christiane Kayser, born in 1954 in Esch/Alzette, Luxembourg, studied in Marburg, Cologne, and Paris. She translates from French, including authors such as Tahar Ben Jelloun, Fouad Laroui, Xavier Leclerc, Fann Attiki, Jean Vautrin, Tonino Benacquista, and Boualem Sansal. Since 1984, she has regularly worked in Central and West Africa on issues of conflict transformation and governance. In the African Great Lakes region, she co-founded the multicultural Pole Institute. Since 2019, she has been involved in establishing the Sahel Committee of the Association of African Studies in Germany (VAD).
Patricia Klobusiczky studied Literary Translation at HHU Düsseldorf and subsequently worked as an editor for ten years. Today, she lives in Berlin and translates modern classics such as Jean Prévost and Louise de Vilmorin, as well as contemporary works by Marie Darrieussecq, Hélène Gestern, Anne Serre, Valérie Zenatti, and Ruth Zylberman from French. She also translates works from around the world from English, including novels by William Boyd, Petina Gappah, Maaza Mengiste, Anne Michaels, and Lorrie Moore. In addition, she regularly conducts workshops and teaches, for example at the Freie Universität Berlin or the Europa-Universität Flensburg, and moderates literary events. From 2017 to 2021, she was the Chair of the Verband deutschsprachiger Übersetzer/innen literarischer und wissenschaftlicher Werke (VdÜ; Association of German-Language Translators) and is currently the spokesperson for the Deutsche Literaturkonferenz (German Literature Conference). She has received multiple awards for her translations, most recently a residency at the Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia in Bamberg.
Franziska Muche is a freelance theater translator. She holds a degree in Cultural Studies with a focus on Spain/Latin America (University of Passau), a Licenciada in Translation and Interpreting (University of Granada), and is a trained actress (Michael Tschechow Studio/ZAV). She translates contemporary theater texts from Spanish and, together with Pilar Sánchez Molina, also into Spanish. She provides surtitles for guest performances and directs the series of dramatic readings Ambigú at Theater unterm Dach. In 2020, she was awarded an Excellence Scholarship by the Deutscher Übersetzerfonds. In 2021 and 2022, she co-edited two anthologies on Spanish-language drama with Carola Heinrich, published by Neofelis Verlag. Since 2021, she has been giving lectures and seminars on theater translation at universities. She lives in Berlin.
Katrin Segerer was born in 1987 in Nabburg and studied Literary Translation at the HHU. Since completing her studies, she has been translating literature for children, young adults, and adults from English and French, including works by Sadie Jones, Gabrielle Filteau-Chiba, Antoine Laurain, B. B. Alston, and Laura Ellen Anderson. In 2014, she participated in the Georges-Arthur-Goldschmidt program and received the Johann-Joachim-Christoph-Bode scholarship. She subsequently received several work grants from the Deutscher Übersetzerfonds. In 2020, she served as a mentor in the mentoring program of the BücherFrauen Frankfurt/Rhein-Neckar. For several years, she has been actively involved as a board member of the professional association VdÜ and teaches practical seminars in literary translation as a guest lecturer, among other places at HHU.
Matthias Strobel, born in 1967, translates from Spanish and English, including works by Alfredo Bryce Echenique, José María Arguedas, and Guillermo Arriaga. In 2014, he was awarded the Europäischer Übersetzerpreis Offenburg (advancement award), and in 2017, he was a finalist for the International Literature Award. He lives in Berlin.
Marion Herbert has been freelancing since 2010, translating crime novels, romance novels, graphic novels, classics, non-fiction, and children's books from English and French. Prior to this, she studied Literary Translation, spent a semester at the University of Nantes, completed a six-month internship at the Arcola Theatre in London, as well as additional internships at ARTE in Strasbourg, the subtitling company VSI in Berlin, and in the editorial department of DuMont in Cologne. In 2011, she was a fellow of the Georges-Arthur-Goldschmidt program. Since 2012, she has been working part-time in the foreign language editing department of the text agency Textklinik in Düsseldorf, and since 2015, she occasionally leads translation workshops and seminars at the University of Düsseldorf.
Stefanie Jacobs, born in 1981 in Thuringia, studied Literary Translation (English and French) at Heinrich-Heine-University after completing an apprenticeship as a bank clerk. Since graduating in 2007, she has translated authors such as Anthony Marra, Lauren Groff, Lisa Halliday, Grégoire Hervier, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Edna O'Brien, as well as musician-writers like Carrie Brownstein, Neil Young, and Nick Cave. She lives and works in Wuppertal.
Oliver Plaschka, born in 1975 in Speyer, studied Ethnology and English at the University of Heidelberg and completed his studies in 2009 with a doctorate in literary studies on pastoral motifs in fantasy literature. Today, he works as a freelance author and translator. His most recent publications include the Shakespeare adaptation "Der Wächter der Winde" (Hobbit Presse) and the historical novel "Marco Polo" (Droemer). He has translated works by Peter S. Beagle, Diana Wynne Jones, Ray Bradbury, Stephen Chbosky, and Brandon Sanderson into German. Additionally, he occasionally shares his love for interesting books in seminar halls and other venues. Imogen Taylor studied German and Romance languages in Oxford and Berlin and earned her doctorate in 18th-century French literature at Humboldt University Berlin. For over a decade, she has been translating literature from German and French into English. She has translated works by authors such as Alfred Döblin, Dana Grigorcea, and Sasha Salzmann, and is currently working on an English translation of Julia Franck's autobiography "Welten auseinander."
